Emily Bender, Fulbright scholar and author of the Eating Well chapter
in the 2005 edition of the internationally acclaimed best-seller Our
Bodies, Ourselves, is a certified nutrition consultant. In addition to
her work with individual clients, she is on the faculty of Hawthorn
University where she trains other nutritionists to use to powerful
tools of whole foods nutrition.
Emily is Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition, having received the
highest score on the first-ever Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Exam,
sponsored by the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, in
2007. In addition to her nutrition certification, Emily holds an M.A.
in Interdisciplinary Art from San Francisco State University and a B.A.
with honors in French from Oberlin College.
Emily’s approach to nutrition is influenced by personal experience from
her own health struggles with undiagnosed food and chemical
sensitivities, her passion for good food and cooking, and her
commitment to environmental sustainability.
As a mom, Emily understands the challenges of incorporating healthy
eating into a busy lifestyle. She loves working with clients to develop
individualized, delicious, realistic, and healing nutrition programs
that meet their needs. Her expertise in working collaboratively and her
creativity help her to bring out people’s best. In addition, she
brings her lively speaking style to public presentations and community
education classes, making the complexities of nutrition accessible to
everyone.
Emily writes on a variety of nutrition and health topics. She has been a monthly columnist for the website Gay.com, as well as
for Marin and Sonoma county based newspaper We the People. She writes
articles about nutrition and health for various publications on a
freelance basis, and is a frequent expert source for nutrition articles
at RealJock.com. She also worked with a well-known publisher as an
expert reader for a book on low-carb diets, and she has spoken on the
radio about the complexities of these popular diets.
Emily also sings with the nationally-ranked a cappella group Solstice. She lives with her spouse, Hannah Doress, and son, Abraham Bender-Doress, in Fairfax, California. She sees clients in her Anselmo, California office, and at the Fairfax Community Wellness Center, an affordable, not-for-profit holistic health center.
